General Notes:
The father of Lewis Murray was apparently evicted from his holding at Kildonan in Sutherlandshire, and moved to Marrel. Lewis Murray was employed as gamekeeper on the Duke of Sutherland's estate.
Frank McDonald Murray (great grandson) wrote on 27/01/1977 ...
"After the downfall of the Stuarts (Bonnie Prince Charlie) in 1746 at Culloden, and resultant Highland "clearances" which devastated the Highland North, the Western Highlands, and in part the Western Isles, our family history begins.
The "clearances", large areas which for generations had supported many clansmen in a state of happiness if not oppulence, were given over to sheep and deer.
The unfortunate inhabitants were evicted, MacEons and Murrays among them. Emigration became wholesale, it was the alternative to starvation. They were burned out, the roofs were burned over their heads.
I write this because the father of Lewis Murray was evicted from his holding in Sutherlandshire."
